about

A fresh take on a McDougall classic, featuring the Al Torres horn section.

lyrics

together, we lived under the stars
with things in ones and twos
happily, we walked through the fields
on two feet without shoes
until someone suggested
there were more things we could use
we all conversed and most agreed

when the cheers came to an end
we then had threes and fours
with the trees we built our houses
and on our houses we put doors
as we covered the ground over
with fine wooden floors
and cut our conversation time in half

then each of us gained
our own five and six
we endeavored to make better
our own iron stone and sticks
we forgot about the days
when there was so much less to fix
and enlightenment came by simple means

we started to get tired
when we acquired seven and eight
the faster that we moved
the more we showed up late
with our fingertips we spoke
as we ate food without a plate
and face-to-face was replaced

and not many were able
to get a nine or ten
most were sunk in sickness
and loneliness by then
and happiness was spoken of
as a "remember when"
and we all started to search out something less

so look passed the additions
and divisions to our space
and developments named after
the things that they erase
the finest of oaks
used to stand guard in this place
and I regret we may not feel their shade again

so bend and ear, if you can still hear
above the mechanical sounds
the billboards are proclaiming
that we've progressed in leaps and bounds
but I haven't leapt or bound
since I played on the old playgrounds
and walked arm-over-shoulder with my best friends

but now my friends, they are my colleagues
but my colleagues aren't my neighbors
and the folks that live in my neighborhood
are nothing more than local strangers
I see them when they come out
to collect their morning papers
from their houses painted every shade of beige

the ending of this story
does not have to be sad
as long as we don't fall in with those
who say, "hey, it's not that bad"
and the more that we remember
the riches we once had
when all we had was each other and things in ones and twos
